2022 World Championships

Hubbards, Nova Scotia - August - September 2022

The World Championships in Nova Scotia was our personal test event and the first major target since we began sailing together in May ‘21. It was the first event where the results truly felt like they mattered, and it was more than just an opportunity to continue learning. More so than before, we had to ensure our minds, bodies, and boat were well prepped to work at max capacity during the 6 days of the event.

This included over 70 miles of biking, 10 days in the gym, and 17 days of sailing in the three weeks leading up to the event. Coaches Thomas Barrows and Luther Carpenter helped shape our goals for the training and regatta, and kept good track of us throughout the month.

We rented an airbnb with two American teammates in Halifax, about 30 minutes from the venue. Our typical schedule during training was to wake up with a bike ride or gym workout around 8am. After eating breakfast we’d head to the boat around 10:30-11 and meet to briefly review video from the previous practice and plan the training. We typically spent 1-2 hours speed tuning and boat handling, and finished the day with an hour of racing with other teams and starting drills. We’d arrive back in Halifax around 6pm and rest and eat dinner, or get another short workout if we had a lighter practice day.

We quickly fell into a routine that we hope to replicate in future training camps. It’s becoming more clear the race begins before the first gun at this level; creating good routines and staying efficient gives you the best opportunity to improve constantly and arrive at the starting line prepared.

The Worlds gave us countless days of sailing against the best 49ers in the world and each day we came prepared to make the most of the training. Unfortunately, the results did not illustrate the skill we’ve gained up until this point. It did, however, make it clear what we need to work on during this winter so we can start next season at the 2023 Princess Sofia regatta in March ready to climb up the results.
