U.S. Sailing Team Camp: January 2022

Miami, FL - January 2022

The start of 2022 marked the first year of full focus on the 2024 Olympic cycle. With the delay of the Summer 2021 Olympics, the build-up to the ‘24 go around of the games was delayed by several months. This January was a kickoff for the ODP and US Team athletes to get together and train across all olympic sailing classes. We spent ten days sailing, learning, and debriefing with six other 49ers and over 200 U.S. athletes in total. We had U.S. coaches Mark Asquith, Luther Carpenter, and Grant “Fuzz” Spanhake working with us all week. This camp was a great intro to the group shooting for Paris, and the U.S coaches and staff introduced us to new technology, techniques, and good practices. We worked with the Gill staff to help fit and design 49er gear for the upcoming 3 years. We worked with reps to use Njord technology to track our sailing and measure gains and losses through maneuvers.

We started each morning with a zoom presentation from various experts. We covered topics such as nutrition, fitness, hydrodynamics, applied technology, establishing winning mindsets. Each of these speakers gave us a new perspective on how to accomplish our goals, and created a feeling of collective learning that was great to see.
