2021 E-Scow Nationals

Torch Lake, MI - September 2021

Casey

After finishing our training in Long Island in August, I met up with Reed in Torch Lake Michigan for the annual E-Scow National Champs in early September.

An extra challenge we had to factor in this summer were the last few requirements of my college career - throughout our summer training, I attended class remotely to finish my Economics degree after adding a second major late in the game. During our Sayville camp, this entailed making the two hour commute to the sailing venue early in the morning to attend class at a Starbucks near the boats. The last week of the camp, my routine involved staying late at the Starbucks, heading back early in the morning to take my final exams, then joining the boys by noon to get a solid day on the water.

Shortly after wrapping up the camp and the last few academic hours of my college career in August, I joined Reed in Torch Lake, Michigan for the 2021 E Scow National Champs in the first week of September. After two days of light air, the last day of the regatta ended with a great 18-20 knot day with our boat, “Bad Dog Racing” finishing 15th out of 66. Reed grew up competing on Torch lake in the E-Scow fleet, so it was great racing in familiar waters. With Reed on the tiller and me on the Spinnaker and boards, the last day felt just like a day of 49er sailing as we blasted downwind. Reed and I were also joined by Reed’s younger brother, Wade Lorimer, and local crew Chris Stern. We qualified for the E-Scow Blue Chip invitational event later that month, but were unable to compete due to 49er commitments on the east coast.
